A Day with the Farmers
From Josh Marr, Farmscape’s Lead Farmer at RMV Farms. November 15, 2023
From Joanne, a farmer since day one that has committed to weekly visits for the last 5 years (at least!). The sweetest most soft spoken retired teacher who gets her granddaughter up early, just so they can get some farming in before she drops her off at school. The speed at which she pulls out a crop that is ready to be harvested, is a sight to behold.
To Paul, a committed farmer, always willing to help a new resident farmer learn the ropes and has endless stories of the wonderful creations his wife makes from the veggies he brings home. Always working alongside others.
To Henry, a 4 year old boy who is building lasting memories at the farm with his mom. Never afraid to connect with the other adults around the farm and always wanting to show them something. The joy on his face as he presents his prize, a long purple carrot freshly pulled from the ground.
To Megan, a pregnant farmer only months from expanding her own little family, still finding the time to visit and tend to the land. Moving gracefully as she plants, tends and harvests. Flowing with the tranquility of the land.
To Kim, the wife of my fraternity brother and lifelong friend Will, who moved into the community a couple years back, exclaiming that the farm is what brought her here, not knowing that I work here. To seeing Oliver, their 5 year old son growing up at the farm. He doesn't just love the farm. this is "his" farm. He knows where everything is, knows the farmers and attends all the events.
To John, a no-BS guy who doesn't talk much, but works hard and fast, ready to tackle any job big or small. To Kelli. his adult daughter, who is new to farming but enthusiastic about the opportunity to learn and grow.
To Laurel, a gentle and sweet retired banker, who loves to watch plants grow and the changing of the seasons. Who's only disappointment lies in not being able to help more with her bad back, and having to tend to her husband's dementia. The land provides her peace and flow.
And finally to me, as I look out into the small plot of land that we call Esencia Farm, with the sound of thunder in the background and watching the rain soaking deep into the soil. I feel endlessly grateful to get to experience these little moments day after day, week after week, and year after year. It's a true honor to be a source of knowledge, guidance, and joy. As we step forward together, carving a path, and forging a new way of farming.
